On Friday 23/10/2015, members of the Air Force Intelligence Department, as they introduced themselves, arrested the opposition figure and non-violent peace activist Mohamad Saleh, (a.k.a. Abu Ali Sale) from his home in the city of Homs.
Mr. Mohamad Saleh is 57 years; married and lives with his family in the city of Homs. He was arrested before in 2011 because of his non-violent activism and he had spent 12 years before as political prisoner being released in 2000. He has played a major role in the release of many detainees and hostages. His main concern was to help restore peace to the city of Homs and its countryside.
The Syrian Civil Coalition (known as Tamas) believes that the arrest of Mr. Mohamed Saleh is a continuation of the clamp down against figures in the peace movement, of which he was one of most prominent champions and an attempt to silence the voices of peace that are still working inside Syria.
Indeed, Tamas expresses its opposition to such systematic, arbitrary, unconstitutional, and illegal practices by the Syrian security forces against Syrian citizens, particularly peaceful ones, as well as for the resulting arbitrary detentions, torture, and illegal executions. Tamas considers such acts, as denoted by their nature, the circumstances in which they are committed, and their perpetrators, to be crimes against humanity and a blatant breach of the Syrian constitution itself and to all covenants of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It condemns in the strongest terms possible such attacks on the lives of citizens, whatever their backgrounds may be, and on their legitimate right to freedom of expression. Furthermore, it considers Mr. Mohamed Saleh to be in a state of enforced disappearance and, as such, holds the security authorities fully responsible for his safety.
Tamas calls upon all Syrian civil society organizations and figures to show solidarity with him and with all the detainees and people who are in enforced disappearance. Moreover, Tamas appeals to all rights bodies and organizations in the world to show solidarity with the family of Mr. Mohamed Saleh and to increase pressure for his release and the release of all the detainees of the freedom of expression detainees in Syria
Long Live A Free and Democratic Syria.
